The heat recovery plant will have a production capacity of 10 MW and an annual district heat production capacity of 65,000-70,000 MWh, which represents 15 to 20 per cent of the total district heat demand of the city of Kotka.

Kotka Energy will use waste heat to replace district heating produced by incineration, reducing the use of peat, wood fuels, natural gas and oil. Carbon emissions will be reduced by 8,700 tpy.

Total investments for the project amount to €13m. Kotka Energy will receive an energy investment grant of approximately €1.8m through the EU’s Recovery and Resilience Facility.

The investment decision for the waste heat recovery plant was made at the end of January 2024. Project implementation is planned to take place between May 2024 and November 2025.

The project includes the heat pump plant with process equipment, heat pumps and the plant building.

The plant will initially cover an area of 700 m2 and be located at the mill site of MM Kotkamills.

MM Kotkamills operates a board machine with a capacity to produce 400,000 t of folding boxboard and barrier board and a paper machine, which can manufacture up to 185,000 tpy of saturating kraft paper.
