Italy: Containerboard suppliers institute the first instalment of higher prices in April

  Building on initial success in April, European corrugated case material manufacturers evidently plan to seize the day and have launched a new round of talks about prices for deliveries from June onwards.

 

Sources on both sides of the Italian market report an initial price hike for April deliveries of brown recycled corrugated case material and brown kraftliner. Price for white-top testliner and white-top kraftliner remained unchanged in many instances or moved up only slightly in April.

 

In Italy, manufacturers want to further increase containerboard prices and are working a possible second instalment for deliveries in May. That being said, negotiations between buyers and suppliers about May deliveries were still not done and dusted everywhere in the final days of April.

 

EUWID contacts on both sides of the market are generally unhappy with the adjustments to recycled corrugated case material and kraftliner prices. With demand for corrugated board and packaging still subdued, converters do not understand why paper prices have to move higher. Paper mills lament the low and slow increase in containerboard prices in Italy. The industry is bringing the issue of increasing costs when justifying the need to charge more for containerboard. This is especially true for recycled corrugated case material, as recovered paper prices have been on the upward path across Europe since February or March and are expected to increase again in May.

Some Italian paper producers are rather sceptical when it comes to announcing a new price hike initiative. They want to wait and see what happens in price talks for May before outlining price plans for June or July.
