Schumacher said that against the backdro‌p of the rapidly advancing concentration in the packaging industry, the entrepreneur family was "taking a far-sighted approach to setting the course for a secure future".

To this end, the management is reportedly in advanced talks with potential partners. "Our analyses and future planning led us to the conclusion that continuing as an independent, family-run company would entail significantly more risks than continuing the business in a group with one or more larger competitors,” said Mr Schumacher. The question arises as to what kind of partnership is planned or whether a sale might even be on the cards. The company did not want to comment on this or give further details.

Schumacher Packaging explained that with the concentration of the market, several big, globally active groups had emerged. With their geographical reach, their production and sales power, these groups posed a threat to medium-sized, owner-managed companies. "We cannot ignore these changing market conditions. In a few years‘ time, the pressure on companies like us with a current turnover of around one billion euros will be noticeably greater than it is today,” said Björn Schumacher, CEO of Schumacher Packaging. Market conditions had become even tougher since the start fo the war in Ukraine, with demand for packaging declining, hitting especially small and medium-sized companies, he added.

Schumacher Packaging said that the deal with Saica was an "initial agreement" in its talks with potential partners. As reported, the group plans to sell its Polish business, which consists of two corrugated board plants in Bydgoszcz and Wrocław, two paper mills in Grudziądz and Myszków and three service centres, to the Spanish group. Schumacher Packaging employs 1,540 people in Poland and generated sales of €327m last year.
