The head of Urmia Protection of Environment Office announced the closure and activity suspension of a paper making unit in the industrial area of Karimabad in Urmia.
According to Mehr News Agency quoting the West Azerbaijan Protection of Environment, Mokhtar Khani, referring to a paper recycling and carton making unit monitored in several stages by their department experts, said, "After ensuring about the pollution existence in the activities of the unit, they issued and notified an environmental notice for this pollutant unit."
He added, "Although notices were issued for the unit and face to face negotiation was made with its CEO on not dumping the production wastes in national lands and on preventing the outflow of their industrial wastewater, they kept dumping their solid wastes on the national lands and caused severe environmental pollution in the area by burning them."
Khani added, "Moreover, the leachate from the accumulated wastes was drained outside the area of the unit which has created both pollution and severe stench in the area"
He said, "Concerning the deadline of the notices issued was expired and the fact that no positive and practical measure was taken to prevent the pollution, according to the Article 16 of the law of pollution preventive method and after obtaining the relevant judiciary writ, the mentioned unit was closed and its activity will be prevented until the modified preventive process is carried out."
