UPM said that it is partnering with Metso and the University of Oulu (Finland) to begin a 3-year technology program which will develop measuring and control solutions for the renewing chemical wood processing industry.
The program will focus particularly on developing applications for process waters, energy production and biorefineries, UPM said.
Planning begins immediately, and UPM expects the EUR 6 million-program to get underway at the beginning of 2009.
About 5-10 people from UPM's Kajaani mill will be employed in the program, the company said
A primary goal of the program is to support new business development and to maintain the know-how that has emerged in Kajaani over the years, UPM said
UPM noted that Metso has had a unit in the area for decades developing and marketing process measuring equipment.
In addition, the program will tap into the University of Oulu's know-how in measuring technology, and process and environmental technology.
