International Paper (IP) has announced a $15.3 million investment to strengthen its commitment to conserving forest ecosystems, nature, and biodiversity.
This investment will renew strategic partnerships with key conservation organizations, including the American Forest Foundation (AFF), National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (NFWF), The Nature Conservancy (TNC), and World Wildlife Fund (WWF). These collaborations are integral to IP's Vision 2030 goal of conserving and restoring 1 million acres of ecologically significant forestland.
The partnerships include the Family Forest Carbon Program (FFCP) with AFF and TNC, which helps family forest owners access climate finance. This program has expanded in the Central Appalachian area and will soon launch in the Southeastern U.S., focusing on afforestation and improved forest management. The Forestland Stewards Partnership with NFWF, extended with a $10 million commitment, aims to conserve southern forestlands and enhance wildlife conservation.
IP's collaboration with TNC has advanced sustainable forestry practices beyond its supply chain, focusing on responsible forestry and biodiversity monitoring. Additionally, as part of WWF's Forests Forward program, IP supports responsible sourcing and conservation efforts in priority regions, including assisting Black landowners in the Mobile Basin with legal services to retain generational land.
Sophie Beckham, IP's vice president and chief sustainability officer, emphasized the importance of these partnerships in enhancing sustainability across the company's value chain and driving positive change for people and the planet.
