The layoffs will impact various roles, including production workers, millwrights, administrative staff, electricians, and truck drivers. The company notified state and city officials, stating the layoffs might become permanent if they cannot secure financial support. An additional 65 jobs could be lost if the plant closes permanently.

"While it is hoped that this will be a temporary layoff... if Willamette Falls Paper Company, Inc. is unable to raise capital or sell its assets, the mass layoff will be permanent," said Brian Konen, President of Willamette Falls Paper Company.

This move adds to the economic strain in Oregon, where unemployment was 4.1% in June. The mill, producing envelopes, magazine paper, and gift wrapping paper, previously closed in 2017 but reopened in 2019.

A final decision on the plant's future is expected by August 30th.
