The British recovered paper market remains subdued, with demand for brown grades still falling short of expectations. Packaging paper mills in the UK and on the Continent continue to operate below capacity, and industry sources report widespread downtime across Europe heading into summer.
Export markets have also failed to provide significant relief, although early signs of renewed interest from Asia — particularly Vietnam, Malaysia and Indonesia — are beginning to surface. Buyers there are cautiously monitoring the market, with some hesitant to meet current price expectations.
In the UK, activity in the deinking and tissue segments has been quieter than usual. Planned maintenance at major tissue sites is further dampening purchasing momentum. Meanwhile, uncertainty around container freight rates and currency fluctuations is adding to the challenges faced by exporters.
Despite the pressure, many in the industry believe the market could stabilise in the coming months — provided that Asian demand picks up and logistics costs remain manageable.
