In Shanghai, one of the largest paper markets in China, local papermakers can't keep up with consumers' rapidly growing demand for high quality papers. Not a bad situation to be in if you're on the manufacturing side of the coin.

According to the Shanghai Paper Association, total consumption of paper and paperboard in Shanghai has grown to 2 million metric tons per year (mtpy) and per capita consumption is now 120 kgs.

However, total paper output in Shanghai lags behind demand by over 1 million mtpy, with total output falling short at 950,000 mtpy, the Association said.

Until more local capacity comes online, the unmet demand for high quality paper and various other grades will have to be satisfied by imports from overseas and other provinces, the Association added.
