Mondi's Kuopio mill in Finland will resume semi-chemical fluting production before Christmas.
Production was halted on 4 November when an explosion in the pulp tower also damaged the roof of the production hall, according to the Finnish Safety and Chemicals Agency Tukes, which is currently investigating the incident. No one was injured in the explosion.
"Repairs are underway and we aim to resume production before Christmas. In the meantime, where possible, we will supply our customers with our other semi-chemical flutings, ProVantage Frescoflute and ProVantage Aquaflute, from our mill in Poland. We are focused on ensuring the safe and efficient resumption of normal operations at the mill,” said Juha Koukka, Managing Director of Mondi Kuopio.
In June 2024, Mondi completed the investment project at the Kuopio plant, which resulted in an increase in capacity of over 55,000 tpy to approximately 340,000 tpy of semi-chemical fluting. The project involved modernising the woodyard, the fibre line, the evaporation plant and the paper machine. The paper machine produces the ProVantage Powerflute predominantly used in fresh fruit and vegetable trays and boxes.
