German specialty paper manufacturer Felix Schoeller has introduced RubyPaper, a new photo paper designed for industrial inkjet production and intended to streamline production while preserving the look and feel of traditional photographic prints.
RubyPaper is engineered for applications such as LayFlat photo books, photo prints and posters. According to Felix Schoeller, the paper delivers rapid drying, high color fidelity and sharp image reproduction while eliminating the need for additional lamination or finishing.
By removing post-print finishing steps, the substrate is intended to simplify workflows and support higher-throughput production. RubyPaper is available in both Lustre and Glossy finishes, providing a traditional photographic appearance suited to industrial digital printing.
Engineered for industrial production
The launch reflects a broader trend in digital printing, where paper manufacturers are increasingly tailoring substrates to specific press requirements rather than treating them as passive materials.
As printhead technology and press speeds continue to advance, substrate performance has become an important factor in achieving stable, high-quality production. Drying characteristics, runnability, surface properties and color reproduction all influence productivity, particularly in demanding photo applications.
By combining rapid drying with consistent image quality, engineered papers such as RubyPaper are intended to support higher-throughput production while reducing downstream processing requirements.
Industry recognition
RubyPaper recently received the 2026 Pinnacle Award from PRINTING United Alliance in the Technology category, an annual competition recognizing innovation in the graphic communications industry.
Felix Schoeller will present the award-winning paper at PRINTING United 2026, taking place in Las Vegas from September 23 to 25, alongside its portfolio of specialty papers for digital printing, sublimation and release liner applications.
Substrate innovation gains importance
As industrial inkjet continues to evolve, innovation is extending beyond presses and inks to the paper itself. Manufacturers are increasingly developing substrates that contribute directly to print quality, process stability and manufacturing efficiency.
For converters and commercial printers, advances in specialty papers can reduce processing steps while supporting more consistent production. As a result, substrate engineering is becoming an increasingly strategic component of digital printing workflows, particularly in applications where image quality and productivity are equally critical.
